Route chains
Some routes end where another begins. If you have a month or more, these are the chains that work.
The Dragon ends at Săpânța and the Icons begin in the same place — together they are one month-long road through the whole of mountain Romania, from Hunedoara to Voroneț. September catches both in their ideal window.
The three Alpine routes line up west to east: the Swiss and Austrian passes, then the Dolomites, then the Triglav. The links are short, and September is the month when all three are open and empty.
The parks end at Europa-Park, two and a half hours from Rüdesheim. After two weeks of roller coasters, five days on the Rhine, with castles and ferries, are exactly what is needed — for the children and for the parents.
The Border ends at Cadaqués, where the coast begins. From the Pyrenees you drop to Marseille and take the coves south, all the way to Cabo de Gata — mountain and sea in a single month.
The Riviera empty from late September, then Alba from 20 October, when the truffle begins. Saint-Tropez is three hours from Piedmont, and the two seasons fit end to end.
Europa-Park is an hour from the source of the Danube. The longest chain in the series: the parks in May, then the river to the Delta, with the delta in full migration in early June. Six weeks.
The Dolomites in early October, with the larches yellow and the first snow on the summits, then Alba from 20 October. The link is the longest of the chains, but it runs through Verona, which is no punishment.
